The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the operation of commercial law in the real world. The module involves a number of interactive seminars delivered by leading commercial law practitioners. This module allows students to explore a range of topical and emerging issues in commercial legal practice from local, national, regional and international perspectives. The seminars delivered on the module will vary from year to year to all students engage with topical and important issues in commercial law.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Learn key skills for practice as a commercial lawyer
  2. Gain knowledge of the theories underpinning conflict; how disputes are formed and transformed and the theory behind alternative dispute resolution.
  3. Learn to reflect on and articulate what it means to be a lawyer and explain a lawyer’s role in dispute resolution both within and outside the adversarial system.
  4. Appreciate the differences between “positional” negotiation and “interests-based” negotiation and be aware of adopting a default position
  5. Provide guidance on the different types of dispute resolution processes available based on given facts and make a recommendation of which process is most suitable.
  6. Understand the principles of International Arbitration and Mediation
  7. Understand the principles of International Arbitration and Mediation
  8. Learn mediation skills which will be useful in practice
