MA5115: Supporting Learning in Mathematics
Semester 1 | Credits: 5
This module provides an introduction to aspects of teaching and learning in higher education, that are particularly relevant to graduate students who are assisting students' learning in Mathematics. Applied Mathematics and Statistics, through tutorials and the SUMS support Centre. It emphasises the importance of reflective practice, encouraging participants to analyse their teaching experience and approaches. All participants must undertake appropriate teaching practice, in either or both tutorial classes and SUMS.

Learning Outcomes
- Outline the range of possible approaches to teaching, and the promotion of active student learning available in higher education contexts.
- Reflect on their teaching practice and identify strategies for dealing with some common difficulties.
- Discuss the particular roles and responsibilities of the tutor in both class-room and Support Centre settings.
- Report their acquired experience in teaching or supporting learning in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.
- Show that they have utilised appropriate approaches (including peer/mentor observation) to evaluate teaching.
