Course Modules

Semester 1 | Credits: 10

This module will provide graduates with practical experience in the use and development of algorithms and data structures for genomics, data storage/management approaches for genomic data, genomic data visualisation, and machine learning for genomics.
(Language of instruction: English)

Learning Outcomes
  1. Understand how to represent different types of genomic data using appropriate data structures
  2. Calculate the computational complexity/performance of an algorithm and describe it using Big-O notation
  3. Implement a variety of search/sorting algorithms in Python
  4. Describe how traditional relational database schemas are constructed and write SQL queries to obtain data from them
  5. Explain the use of unstructured data storage approaches and describe their applications in genomics
  6. Visualise different types of genomic data using appropriate visualisation tools and techniques
  7. Explain and apply key machine learning approaches for supervised and unsupervised learning to genomic data
  8. Demonstrate the application of a deep learning algorithm to a genomics dataset
