MD1805: Physical Activity and Exercise in Chronic Disease Management
Semester 2 | Credits: 10
This module examines the lifestyle approaches to physical activity, sedentary behaviour and exercise in the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related conditions. Students will learn how to empower individuals to make and maintain positive lifestyle changes though effective behaviour change techniques. The importance and controversies in physical activity, fitness and sedentary behaviour will be explored through critical review of current guidelines, evidence and practice.

Learning Outcomes
- Support the patient in making positive lifestyle and behaviour modifications in relation to physical activity behaviour through effective communication skills and behavioural change techniques
- Appraise the effects of physical activity related policies on population and individual risk factor control and health
- Apply assessment methods commonly used to inform and evaluate physical activity related interventions in preventive medicine
- Critique the evidence base underlying specific physical activity focussed interventions in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
- Construct an evidence based management plan that addresses physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health-related fitness in a number of individual and population-based scenarios
