MD3105: Erasmus Exchange
Semester 2 | Credits: 0
Erasmus Exchange: 3 month (12 week) clinical rotation exchange programme with European Partner Medical Schools.

Learning Outcomes
- Learn how a ward operates and adapt to the hospital environment, in a new country and healthcare system. Develop confidence working in a hospital and dealing with patients, supervisors and other hospital staff. Observe, understand and develop effective teamwork skills in managing patients and presenting to the clinical specialities during the traineeship.
- Learn how to formulate a plan for the assessment and management of the patient. Apply evidence based medicine, hospital protocols and clinical guidelines to the diagnosis and management of diseases, both acute and chronic. Learn how to select investigations appropriate for the management of patients presenting and interpreting same, such as CT, MRI, blood/urine tests, LFTs and ECG. Knowledge of the meaning of microbiological results, such as antibiotic resistance and susceptibility.
- Develop history-taking and physical patient examination skills; diagnosis through close supervision, observation and feedback from Supervising Consultant. Observe other medical students performing examinations and practice inspection, for example of the hands and face, percussion, palpation and auscultation of the chest and abdomen in order to detect abnormalities and clinical signs of disease. Over the course of the Erasmus Exchange, learn how to recognise signs more quickly, detect abnormal sounds more easily and learn to correlate certain physical findings to diseases.
- Observe and perform clinical tasks and procedures in the specialities during the clinical traineeship. These will include: venepuncture, cannulation, NG tube insertion, digital rectal exam, breast exam, injections and ECG acquisition.
- In addition to the acquisition of clinical skills and knowledge, develop communication, interpersonal, teamwork and time management skills to become a well rounded, professional medical student.
