This module is for students who have already studied Latin for at least two years and are confident in independent reading. Every year a text is chosen in light of the make-up of the group, and classes proceed through a mixture of independent reading, in-seminar translation and study, and investigation of the medieval reception, commentary traditions, and manuscript survival of the chosen text.

  1. will have gained a thorough grounding in the philological exegesis of Late Antique and medieval Latin
  2. will have gained a thorough grounding in the literary exegesis of Late Antique and medieval Latin
  3. will be familiar with the reception of Latin texts in the medieval schools
  4. will be familiar with the scholarly study of Latin texts in the medieval schools
  5. will have practised the literal and stylistically developed translation of a series of sample texts chosen as take-home assignments
