Course Modules
NU231: Clinical Practice 3 & 4
Semester 1 and Semester 2 | Credits: 20
The aim of this module is to expose students to the knowledge and skills required to care for specialist client groups including; the person being cared for in the community, the pregnant woman, the person with a learning disability, the person with a mental illness, the older person, this placement specifically focuses on the aspects of care that students are most likely to encounter as a general nurse. The module will focus on supporting students to develop their organisational and communication skills and increase their understanding of the planning and delivery of care in their specific specialist settings. Students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of caring for these specialist client groups through placement in appropriate settings

- Understanding the ethos and goals of care in the community setting
- Understanding the role of the public health nurse
- Understanding approaches to caring for clients in residential and community settings
- Understanding the role of the midwife in promoting women’s health
- Understanding the physiological changes in pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period
- Understanding and explore the psychological support required by women during pregnancy, labour and the puerperium
- Understanding the role of the midwife in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for women experiencing normal pregnancy and childbirth
- Developing an understanding of the nature and goals of mental handicap/intellectual disability nursing
- Demonstrating an understanding of strategies used to communicate with clients with mental handicap/intellectual disability
- Developing an understanding of the nature and goals of psychiatric nursing
- Understanding and appreciate the role of the psychiatric nurse in supporting people adjust to living with a mental illness
- Understanding the role of the psychiatric nurse in promoting mental health
- Understanding care options for older people & the role of family as carer’s
- Exploring some mental health related aspects of caring for older people e.g. Dementia & Alzheimer’s
- Understanding the role of the nurse in promoting the health of older people
- Understanding the importance of documenting care and good record keeping.
