This module builds on students‟ previous research knowledge with a particular focus on using and interpreting research in midwifery practice. Students will explore evidence based practice and its importance in midwifery practice. As part of this module students will also focus on key quantitative and qualitative approaches to undertaking research in addition to clinical audit and its importance in practice. The ethical principles that are adhered to when undertaking research will also be considered in this module.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Understand what is meant by „evidence based practice‟.
  2. Explore the potential of an evidence-based approach for the development of midwifery practice.
  3. Systematically gather and appraise evidence.
  4. Create a list of evidence based resources applicable to their profession.
  5. Use evidence to support their practice.
  6. Develop their ability to critically evaluate the appropriateness to practice of published research.
  7. Detail the audit cycle and discuss its potential impact on clinical practice.
