This module introduces students to the field of occupational science. It further develops their understanding of people as occupational beings with an innate need for occupation. This module will explore the impact of occupational imbalance, occupational deprivation and occupational alienation and will examine global factors relating to occupational injustice.

Learning Outcomes
  1. [Occupation] Analyse the factors involved in determining what occupations are meaningful to clients, Identify the impact of the dynamic person-occupation-environment relationship on occupational performance; Employ both occupational and activity analysis appropriately in clinical settings; Identify and use meaningful occupations to facilitate attainment of client-goals; Adapt the occupational form or context of the occupation to promote attainment of client goals; Appraise critically how occupation can be used to positively to influence health and well-being; Identify and appraise contemporary issues from the field of occupational science.
  2. [Therapeutic and Professional Relationships] Demonstrate a therapeutic relationship with service users and their carers that are fair, respectful, equitable and inclusive, Engage in professional relationships with the community at large.
  3. [Communication] Modify communication(s) so that is accessible and appropriate for the recipient; Illustrate effective communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal in formal and informal settings.
  4. [Teamwork] Facilitate the active participation of the service user in the occupational therapy process; Employ strategies to support diversity groups and teams; Examine the dynamics in a group and be able to modify or enhance them appropriately; Identify conflicts and their source and apply positive strategies to overcome these; Employ strategies to create and maintain a positive team spirit.
  5. [The OT Process] Integrate contemporary occupational therapy theory and applicable evidence with occupational therapy practice, Apply the OT Process in a culturally appropriate manner.
  6. [Caseload Management] Demonstrate the ability to prioritise clients in accordance with local policy.
  7. [Professional Reasoning] Demonstrate a logical and systematic approach to problem solving and decision making; Engage in reflection on and evaluation of practice; Evaluate their own clinical reasoning skills and identify strategies to develop these further.
  8. [Professional Behaviour] Demonstrate respect for client individuality and difference, Identify ethical, legal and moral challenges in clinical practice and through use of supervision, clinical reasoning and reflective practice identify strategies to address these challenges.
  9. [Quality] Design appropriate evidence based and client centred interventions; Modify interventions to meet client need.
  10. [Evidence Based Practice] Appraise literature critically, Summarise the results into a report.
  11. [Research] Carry out a critical appraisal of the literature, Write a comprehensive report on their findings.
  12. [Context of Professional Practice] Appraise the various social, legal and political factors which influence occupation, Engage innovatively with relevant legislation, policies and national guidelines to promote access to occupational participation for all, Practice in a culturally competent manner.
  13. [Continued Professional Development] Organise their own schedule for further learning in line with goals set; Employ methods reflection on and in-action appropriately; Contribute to the learning and education of others.
