This course will introduce students to the principal positions in contemporary moral theory including consequentialism, deontology and virtue theory, drawing on core historical authors such as Mill, Kant, and Aristotle, as well as contemporary theories, such as the principle-based approach to bioethics, casuistry, care ethics and narrative ethics. Preparation of weekly readings and willingness to participate constructively in class discussion are essential requirements for participation.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe core characteristics of classical and contemporary moral theories
  2. Identify core philosophical concerns arising within each of those theories
  3. Display a sound understanding of underpinning philosophical assumptions of these theories
  4. Critically analyse and compare the responses of different theories to specific moral challenges
  5. Write a coherent essay on the basis of independent use of relevant professional sources
  6. Actively take part in constructive and critical class reflections
