PO100: Professional Development
Semester 1 | Credits: 5
This module has four broad aims:
1. To introduce and promote to podiatric medicine students the importance of personal and professional development by gaining a range of transferable skills essential for effective clinical practice including skills of reflection and academic and interpersonal skills.
2. To integrate podiatric medicine theory and practice by developing professional attitudes, knowledge and skills.
3. To introduce podiatric medicine students to evidence-based practice and the importance of research in health care. Students will gain; literature searching skills using library facilities and databases, an elementary ability to critically appraise literature and referencing skills using Harvard referencing style.
4. To introduce podiatric medicine students to multidisciplinary team learning and working thereby developing an appreciation of collaborative practice.

Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the scope of practice of the podiatrist, the settings they work in and the role of the podiatrist in the multidisciplinary team and the importance of effective communication with other health professionals and patients.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of evidence based practice, continuous professional development and lifelong learning for podiatrists.
- Demonstrate personal and professional development in a range of transferable academic and interpersonal skills.
- Show emerging skills of reflection.
