SL223: Linguistics 2
Semester 1 and Semester 2 | Credits: 5
The aim of this module is to build on the knowledge and skills gained from Linguistics 1 and to focus specifically on the morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic analyses of clinical data.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe and discuss the main aspects of meaning and structure in a range of sentences, selecting relevant descriptive concepts and using appropriate transcription conventions and diagrams.
- Discuss the role of verb argument structure in sentence processing.
- Identify patterns in a range of language data and use linguistic concepts to formulate hypotheses regarding processes underlying client presentations.
- Outline and use systematic methods to analyse different aspects of language, in particular syntax, semantics, and pragmatic language at word, sentence, and text level.
- Outline how theory helps to organize understanding of disorders of syntax, semantics, and pragmatic language (including narratives).
- Continue to practice phonetic transcription of disordered speech and analysis of speech samples.
