This module gives a broad overview of the Irish legal system as it stands today. It discusses the impact of the legal system has on the child and the family, and the various services relevant to children and families engaged with or affected by the legal system.

Learning Outcomes
  1. State the definition and purpose of law itself
  2. Explain what is meant by the separation of powers
  3. Identify the different classifications of law and describe the structure of the courts system
  4. Define key concepts in Irish Family law
  5. State how the child is defined in Irish Law and protected by the Constitution
  6. Define family support and describe the legal framework for family support in Ireland

  • Continuous Assessment (80%)
  • Department-based Assessment (20%)
