Course Modules

Semester 1 and Semester 2 | Credits: 5

This module will explore relevant theories so as to add to your understanding of how families function and relate to those around them. It highlights the importance of connectedness with others and how social policy can play a role in supporting the well-being of families and communities. Major shifts in family formation and dissolution have meant that we can no longer assume traditional solidarities within and across generations. These changes have an impact on the forms of support which members of kin networks require, and the possibilities there are of the support being provided. Economic re-structuring, housing, changes in welfare provision, and new communication technologies as well as demographic changes, influence the forms of support and solidarity generated in different places. The challenge for social policy lies in developing appropriate initiatives which fully reflect this great diversity.
