SP3147: Civic Engagement: Theory, Policy and Practice (S2)
Semester 2 | Credits: 30
This multidisciplinary module, Civic Engagement: Theory, Policy and Practice, seeks to provide an introduction to the complex and contested concepts within civic engagement. Service learning is a key component, with students undertaking a significant experiential learning experience in a non-profit or community organisation. Through this immersive experience accompanying classroom discussion centres on the theoretical questions emerging from scholarly work related to the community of interest as well as the development of cross-cultural and global awareness and skills of critical reflection. Foundational work will establish context of the voluntary body, the wider community and voluntary sector and society as a whole. This is underpinned with an exploration of various definitions of experiential learning, service learning, volunteering and examines a range of critical perspectives, corresponding values, assumptions and theories that impact on policy and practice. In critically examining concepts this module seeks to enhance students’ understanding of social phenomena particularly equality, social justice, and the global sustainable development goals in light of disciplinary theory combined with active collaboration.
