Kinds of CPD

Credit bearing CPD

We offer single modules that are accredited by the National University of Ireland, in other words they carry European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits at a specific QQI level on the National Framework of Qualifications. This means that there is formal tuition and assessment, and the result earned is acknowledged with an official transcript from NUI Galway. These credits can be accumulated towards an award such as a diploma and or used as exemptions on a variety of courses.

Non-credit-bearing CPD

We offer a variety of CPD opportunities that do not carry ECTS but which are recognised by professional bodies as contributing to CPD points or evidence of competence. These are more informal and because they do not involve assessments they are not recognised on the QQI National Framework of Qualifications. However, this training may be recognised by professional bodies as meeting their parameters for continuous professional development.

Bespoke CPD

We have considerable experience of collaborating with industry partners to develop training specifically for a sector or even a company. This can range from guest speakers, workshops, training sessions and conferences right up to creating diploma level awards. The format can be developed to meet the specific needs of the participants and delivered in a flexible manner. The content is based on the most up-to-date research and draws on the wealth of academic and industry experience available within the University. See Create Bespoke Modules for further information.

Delivery Formats

Face-to-Face teaching and learning is the familiar format in a classroom which facilitates interactivity, small group discussions and demonstration. Content is provided in printed format and classes are usually held on NUI Galway campus.

Online teaching & learning uses the Virtual Learning Environment of Blackboard, where all content is stored, assignments are submitted and classes are held. It has the advantage of facilitating students from across the country, provides rapid access to tutors and flexibility of accessing content from anywhere with a wifi connection.

Blended learning combines the advantages of face-to-face with those of online learning. With format students attend classes at convenient times and these are augmented with online activities and all the flexibility that a Virtual Learning Environment provides for busy professionals.

Case Studies

Clinical Primary Care modules are continuous professional development modules for general practitioners and practice nurses offered by the Discipline of General Practice at NUI Galway. The three modules were designed to meet the needs of general practitioners and are delivered by clinical experts with the aim of improving patient care through supporting and upskilling practitioners. Short-listed for Course of the Year in Health Science award by GradIreland in 2017 these 10 ECTS modules are approved by the Irish College of General Practitioners to fulfil their professional competence assurance.
