Course overview

This is a Structured PhD programme for experienced midwives which aims to further develop practice expertise and capacity to assure quality and patient outcomes, lead and manage change. This programme has been specifically developed for experienced midwives in leadership roles. 

Students are required to undertake the following compulsory modules on the programme (totalling 90 ECTS):

  • Advanced Nursing Concepts in Theory and Practice

  • Health Economics and Influencing Policy

  • Systematic Review and Research Synthesis

  • Leadership and Interprofessional Collaboration

  • Research Practice

Structured PhD (Doctorate in Midwifery) – full-time, four years
Structured PhD (Doctorate in Midwifery) – part-time, six years

Entry requirements

PhD candidates should normally have a high honours standard in a relevant academic discipline at primary degree level or equivalent together with the support of an academic staff member who is approved by the College to supervise the research in terms of its nature and scope.

Candidates will be required to submit a well-developed research proposal for consideration by the School as part of their application.
