Course overview

This Programme is currently under review for 2015/16 entry

The MBS (Electronic Commerce) is an innovative postgraduate programme that combines business management, technological skills and a graduate professional experience programme. Participants develop a comprehensive portfolio of business and analytical skills and also develop extensive technical expertise. The opportunity to observe the practical applications of these skills and knowledge is provided in the second year through the graduate professional experience programme.

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the range of technical and business skills needed to implement and manage e-commerce solutions in a business environment. Students gain practical knowledge of business systems analysis and design; project management; database design; applications development; internet and multimedia development; and business policy. Specialised aspects are also covered, including: human-computer interaction, information systems security, business analytics and decision support systems, electronic commerce strategy and IS innovation.

The course is a full-time degree which commences in September and continues for two academic years. In Year 1 of the programme students take six courses each semester. Students are assessed at the end of each semester in Year 1, either by exam, continuous assessment or a combination of both.

The second year of the MBS provides the opportunity for students to apply the skills they have acquired in Year One by working for companies such as Microsoft and Ericsson. The Graduate Experience Programme (GEP) is a work placement opportunity during which students work on e-commerce and information systems related projects.

Marie McCann—2nd Year student

"Following my degree I worked in the IT/Business area for three years. This gave me the insight into the industry and spurred me on return to University to improve my skill base and increase my career development potential.

The opportunity to study such a wide variety of subjects in my MBS E-Commerce degree offered me the chance to select  various career paths within the IT and Business area.

My work placement opportunity in year two has been an immensely valuable experience, and has allowed me to refine all the skills I gained within a professional environment in industry.

Since completing all subjects in year one, I was able make an informed decision as to what subject area I wanted to concentrate on during my work placement. In my case this was Interactive Systems Design.

It has been a personal challenge, and the whole experience has been extremely positive and enjoyable. The support you receive from all the lecturers is fantastic and very relevant.  I am delighted that I chose the MBS E-Commerce Master’s Degree course."

Elaine Keith—1st year student

"As a mature student returning to university after a long period of work this could have easily been a daunting experience, however the lecturers and fellow students made it a really enjoyable, but challenging time.  The course caters for all levels of IT experience and there is plenty of opportunity to learn and hone both practical and theoretical skills on the course.  I would definitely recommend the programme to anyone wishing to develop their skill-set in this area."
