Course overview

Astronomy is the oldest and at the same time the most modern of the sciences. The programme covers the theory of astrophysics, the latest technologies, observational techniques, and data analysis methods of modern Astronomy. Students also learn Physics, Mathematics, applied Mathematics and Computer Science, which is a foundation for the subjects in astrophysics. There is a well-equipped observatory on campus, and students take a field trip to use an Italian observatory in their third year.

BSc (Physics with Astrophysics)

"...I came into this course as a mature student after attending the Foundation Course in Maths and Science. I wanted to change career direction and felt that a Physics degree would give me the widest possible scope. When I saw that NUI Galway were offering an Astrophysics module, I jumped at the chance to combine the degree with a lifelong interest in amateur Astronomy. So far, I am very much enjoying the course, and find it to be both challenging and rewarding..."
