Founded in 2005, the Centre for Research on Occupational and Life Stress (CROLS) is an integrated, interdisciplinary research consortium at NUI Galway, which comprises collaborators from the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies, the College of Business, Public Policy & Law, the College of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences, and the College of Science. Its activities focus on the phenomenon of psychological stress as it impinges on occupational and life contexts.
CROLS is a founding and a lead member of NUI Galway’s social science consortium (comprising six research centres), which in 2007 was awarded €5.8 million under the fourth cycle of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions as part of the
Irish Social Science Platform (ISSP). Within the framework of the ISSP, CROLS is responsible for research focusing on psychosocial factors (including social support) in stress.
The activities of CROLS focus on psychological stress as it impinges on occupational and life contexts. Although commonly understood as a feeling of intense emotional pressure, stress is more technically described as a sense of being unable to cope with the demands presented by one’s environment.
