Staff eMail Service Enhancement Project (Exchange 2010)
Information Solutions & Services are currently upgrading the existing Microsoft Exchange Server from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. As part of this process it is necessary that all users’ mailboxes be migrated to the new Exchange infrastructure.
Objective: To reduce the complexity and enhance the staff email service.
Benefits to the University include:
-
Customer benefits
- Staff will have a consistent, stable, industry standard messaging service
- Improved Web Access - Outlook Web Access (now called
Outlook Web App) has many improved features including rich experience with other browsers such as Firefox and Safari, name cache, ability to set status for messages, filters, advanced search, Instant Messaging, Email conversations are much easier to manage via the updated Conversation View.
- Improved sharing/collaboration tools
- Bigger mailbox quotas will be possible
- Out of Office - In Exchange 2010, users can now set an Out Of Office response in advance with a defined schedule. It also allows messages to be customized for internal and external users or allowing to send messages only to your contacts.
- Additional features and services will be possible including integration with the telephone system and integrated archiving
-
Unified Staff eMail Service: Consolidation of the MIS and AC email services into one location thus consolidating and minimising the administration effort required and costs. Staff will have one less password to maintain as the staff UDS passwords will be used for accessing mail.
-
Problem prevention: The existing staff email service has almost reached capacity. This project will put in place plans to meet the growing capacity requirements, particularly storage while reducing complexity.
Service Limitations
Some limitations of email service on Exchange 2010 do exist:
- Booking shared resources – You will be unable to book a shared resource (e.g. meeting room) until the resource has also been migrated to the Exchange 2010 service.
- Viewing calendars - Users on Exchange 2003 will be unable to view your free/busy schedule and may find it difficult scheduling appointments with you.
