A USB modem will let you connect your computer over the high-speed 3G broadband mobile network, so you can browse the web and send and receive email. It is connected to the computer via USB which makes the product usable with any computer.
3G Broadband is another name for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). This allows up to four times faster data speeds then 3G and should make downloading data and browsing the web even faster.
The Sierra Wireless USB 302 enables uplink speeds of up to 2Mbps and download rates of 7.2 Mbps; however, actual speed is dependent on O2's network coverage at your location. When outside of 3G broadband coverage, customers will automatically be able to access the web using O2's existing UMTS or GPRS services.
Experience of testing shows a typical speed of 500kb/s for download. Greater download speeds may be possible depending on network coverage. Experience of testing shows that upload speed is slow; no better than a dial-up modem i.e. 14 - 28 Kb/s. On this basis, the USB modem speeds are suited to Internet browsing but not Internet activity that requires fast upload speed such as gaming. The 15GB monthly download limit which applies is generous for typical Internet browsing but would not be suitable for repeated downloading of large files e.g. movies.
