Studentmail, moving messages from webmail
How can I move messages from my WebMail mailbox to my new StudentMail account?
The following steps allow you to copy all messages in your WebMail Inbox to your new StudentMail account. These steps are intended for use by students registered prior to 21 August 2008 who have been given a new email account on the StudentMail service. Please note that the original mailbox will remain intact with all folders and messages until the WebMail servers are de-commissioned in Summer 2009.
Subfolders, contacts etc. are not copied. To move messages in any subfolders, copy contents to the Inbox before carrying out the steps below. Contacts etc. can be moved by attaching them to a message and forwarding it to the new email address.
It is recommended that you complete all steps (1 - 11) as follows:
- Login to your new StudentMail account (to which messages will be copied)
- Click
Options (at the top right of the screen)
- You are automatically shown the
Account tab, in the
Other Accounts section at the bottom of the screen, click
New
- In the
New Account window, enter the following sections and fields:
E-mail address: Enter your student email address for the old account in the format
studentnumber
beacon.nuigalway.ie
Password: Enter the email password for the old WebMail account
Click
Next
- If you get a dialog box about a connection problem as shown below
Click on the words "
click here" - shown circled in the image below.
- In the
New Account Connection window, complete the fields as follows:
Display name:
Optional. This is your name for the subscription
E-mail address: Enter your student email address for the old account in the format
studentnumber
beacon.nuigalway.ie
User name: Enter your student ID number
Password: Enter the email password for the old WebMail account
Incoming server:
140.203.9.96
Authentication:
Basic
Encryption:
None
Port:
110
Click
Save
You will see an entry for the Display Name with the Status “
Connecting Now”
- Return to your inbox (click
MyMail at the top of the screen) and you will see additional messages in your inbox which are copied from the old mailbox.
- Return to view the
New Account entry again.
Click
Options and then click
Account and then view the
Other Accounts section.
The status of your entry should be “
OK” which means that all messages were copied from the old mailbox.
Note: At times of peak usage i.e. 11:00 to 16:00, Monday to Thursday inclusive, the status of the entry may be "Failed" as the WebMail server is unable to deal with all connection attempts. In this case, return to your inbox (click MyMail at the top of the screen) and check the status the next time you login to StudentMail. If the status remains at "Failed" after a number of StudentMail login attempts outside of peak usage times, please contact the Service Desk.
- Delete the New Account (to avoid multiple copies of the messages appearing).
While in the
Account tab (as in step 8), select the entry for your
studentnumber
beacon.nuigalway.ie
and then click the Delete button
- A warning message will appear Are you sure you want to stop connecting to
studentnumber
beacon.nuigalway.ie?
Click
Yes.
- Return to your inbox (click
MyMail at the top of the screen).
