The Galway Ensemble in Residence: ConTempo Quartet

The award-winning quartet has been Galway's 'ensemble in residence' for over ten years. The residency is organised by the Galway Music Residency and supported by NUI Galway.

Joe Burke Archive

Joe Burke, the renowned  East Galway, button accordion player, has amassed an enviable collection of music recordings, in addition to keeping meticulous records of correspondance, newspaper clippings, photographs and promotional documents.  Recognising the local, national and indeed international importance of the material, the Centre for Irish Studies on behalf of the Hardiman Library, at NUI Galway was delighted to accept the donation of this material. This collection provides an extraordinary resource for musicians and scholars alike.

Music for Galway

An organisation set up to promote and perform classical music in the West of Ireland. Music for Galway regularly bring world-class musicians to perform at venues in the University.

Amhráin Árainn | Aran Songs blog

Blag dátheangach faoin taighde atá ar bun ag an Dr Deirdre Ní Chonghaile, ina n-eisíonn sí eagráin d’amhráin a cumadh in Árainn.

A bilingual blog documenting the research of Dr Deirdre Ní Chonghaile, who is publishing editions of songs composed on the Aran islands.

Amhránaí/Rinceoir Cónaitheach Sean-nóis | Sean-nós singer/dancer in residence

Reachtálann Ionad an Léinn Éireannaigh cónaitheacht imrothlach do amhránaithe agus rinceoirí sean-nóis, chun sraith de cheardlanna a chur ar fáil ar champas. Tá na ceardlanna seo ar fáil do chomhaltaí foirne, do mhic léinn agus don phobal, agus déantar poiblíocht orthu ar fud na Gaillimhe.

The Centre for Irish Studies organises a revolving residency that invites sean-nós singers and dancers to host regular workshops in their arts on campus. These workshops are open to staff, students and members of the public, and are promoted widely around Galway.

This weekly lunchtime concert series for students celebrates the music of legends of traditional music and international guest musicians.

Martin Reilly Lecture Series

The Martin Reilly Lectures Series, run by Comhrá Ceoil at the Centre for Irish Studies, offers a platform for researcher-practitioners of Irish traditional music to present their work in a public space to their peers, outside of the academic environment.  The Spring series takes place at Galway City Library and is named in memory of the nineteenth century Galway piper, Martin Reilly.  

Seisiún ceoil i gCaifé Áras na Gaeilge

Bíonn seisiún ceoil seachtainiúil ar siúl i gCaifé Áras na Gaeilge gach Dé Céadaoin ag am lóin, ina nglacann comhaltaí foirne agus mic léinn páirt.

The weekly session held in the café in Áras na Gaeilge at Wednesday lunchtimes is open to staff and students to join in.

Space and Sound

A series of free lunchtime concerts with ConTempo Quartet, celebrating the University's newest architectural spaces through contemporary classical music.

Staff and Student choirs

The staff and student choirs rehearse on campus, and perform at competitions and charitable events in Galway and around Ireland.

Societies

Choral Society

A non-auditioned, five-part student choir, including chamber and barbershop, who perform regularly around Ireland.

DJ Soc

A society for students interested in music and learning the skills of DJing.

Irish Studies Society

The Irish Studies Society aims to promote Irish culture in a very accessible way, through music, theatre, drama and comedy.

Medical Orchestra

An orchestra composed of medical students in the University. They perform at events across Galway and region.

NUI Galway Chamber Orchestra

Celebrating its thirteenth season in the University, the student orchestra is run voluntarily as part of the Orchestra Soc.

Trad Soc

Trad Soc encourages students to express and indulge in their passion for traditional music.
