Dr Nathan Quinlan is a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at NUI Galway, and a member the Biomechanics Research Centre (BMEC). He specialises in the application of fluid dynamics in medical devices, medical device manufacturing and physiology, including the development of novel computational and experimental techniques.
Dr Quinlan’s research interests are in fluid dynamics, and in particular in applications to biology and medical devices. He has extensive experience in the development and application of both experimental and computational techniques, including novel mesh-free approaches to computational fluid dynamics. He has collaborated with the a number of partners in the medical devices industry and received competitive research funding from SFI, Enterprise Ireland and the EU, among others.
This work has application to aerosol drug delivery, cardiovascular disease, and acute lung injury.
Dr Quinlan has received the Bronze Medal of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and the NUI Galway President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. He was a member of teams that received the Ryan Award for Innovation and the Libersky Prize in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics.
Dr Quinlan has published 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals, two book chapters and over 80 conference presentations, including an international keynote lecture.
Dr Quinlan is the secretary of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Research Interest Group, a former member of the Bioengineering Section Council of Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland, and chair of the 2011 Bioengineering in Ireland conference.
