Professor Olivier Thomas

Investigator

Prof. Olivier P. Thomas is Professor in Marine Biodiscovery at the School of Chemistry NUI Galway and coordinator of the National Marine Biodiscovery Laboratory with the Marine Institute, Oranmore. His research is focused on the search for new biomolecules from the marine environment with applications in different fields like food science, cosmetics, therapeutics and medical devices.

Prof. Thomas research is shared between basic understanding of the biomolecules in the environment and applications of these biomolecules in different sectors.

Ireland has a strategic position for the development of Marine Biodiscovery. In the framework of several National and European initiatives his groups activities will contribute to the main objective of “Harnessing our Ocean Wealth” (www.imdo.ie/Home/site-area/maritime-policy/harnessing-our-ocean-wealth/harnessing-our-ocean-wealth). With the key support of the Marine Institute his research group aims to increase  scientific knowledge on marine biomolecules in order to implement new opportunities in the marine sector and links with other sectors like biomedicine and pharmacology.

Prof. Thomas has published more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and holds 1 patent. Prof. Thomas is member of the editorial board of 2 journals. He has been part of several large national/international projects, such as the EU FP7 project BAMMBO and the Marine Institute funding of the National Marine Biodiscovery Laboratory.
