Investigators
Professor Paul Murphy
Professor Paul V Murphy is an Established Professor of Chemistry and has research interests in Organic Synthesis and Medicinal Chemistry with a focus on Carbohydrates.
Prof. Murphy’s research outputs include:
- synthesis of important natural products & their analogues, which are relevant in drug discovery
- glycomimetic research
- synthesis of frameworks/scaffolds for drug discovery
- synthesis method development
- glycoclusters as inhibitors/ligands of biomedically important lectins
The clinical targets to benefit from this research include: galectins, human macrophage galactose C-type lectin, fascin, influenza hemagglutinin, glycoprocessing enzymes such as glycosidases. These various targets are relevant to infection, fibrosis & cancer and thus compounds developed could have applications in these areas.
Prof. Murphy is currently the Irish representative to both International Carbohydrate Organization (ICO) & European Carbohydrate Organisation (ECO). He has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland. He is a Member of the American Chemical Society.
Prof. Murphy has obtained a number of awards and has chaired a number of international meetings and has been invited to contribute reviews and articles to a number of special issues of Journals. He is currently guest editor, Volume 4, Carbohydrate Chemistry: Proven Synthetic Methods and was previously an Editorial Board Member of the journal Carbohydrate Research.
