CÚRAM PhD student Gillian Murphy was recently awarded a prize for her presentation in a VC pitch competition while taking part in University of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District ‘Summer by Design’ international workshop.

‘Summer by Design’ is a two-week long workshop on the translation and commercialization of regenerative medicine. The programme involved a series of classes and workshops, ranging from topics such as early stage investment, finance, strategy, marketing, intellectual property, regulatory affairs and clinical translation. Participants were also offered one-on-one pitch coaching sessions.

Speaking of her experience in the programme, Murphy said: "I would highly recommend this opportunity to any researcher with an entrepreneurial mindset that would like to bring their research ideas from bench-to-bedside."

Gillian is currently researching an advanced hydrogel drug delivery approach for Type 2 diabetes mellitus with Prof. Abhay Pandit.

Medicine by Design, in partnership with CCRM and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, hosts a two-week workshop each summer for high-performing PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows from around the world to advance their understanding of how to translate and commercialize regenerative medicine research. The workshop takes place in Toronto, Canada, where stem cells were first discovered in the 1960s and a leading regenerative medicine ecosystem has developed.

Summer by Design brings together trainees from selected international regenerative medicine institutes and the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals to learn from experts in clinical translation and commercialization, explore the city’s dynamic life sciences hub, and make connections with emerging researchers from around the world.”
