Getting into Development - what to do?

• Volunteering can often be a useful way of getting into Development. Not only is it very often a worthwhile experience, it also allows you to gain an understanding of the area and may help you decide if it is a career you want to pursue.Volunteering can also be a useful way of networking with those working in the area. 
• Post Graduate Qualification. Most organisations now require a postgraduate qualification for working in Development. See DERN information on PostGraduate Opportunities in Ireland and the UK. 
• Be proactive! Proactively sending your CV to development organisations may help, as many of these organisations will keep your CV on file, and contact you if vacancies do arise
• Language. Learning a language such as can be an asset, especially if you want to work overseas

Volunteering and Internships

• COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE INITIATIVE (CKI), NUI GALWAY
  The volunteering support programme, ALIVE in NUI Galway has up to date information on volunteering opportunities with community organisations.
  
  
• OXFAM  IRELAND
  Oxfam offer internships each year for the Christmas Campaign in their Fundraising Department.  These usually start in September/October and continue until December/January.
  
  
• CONCERN
  Concern offer internships during the summer months. They are usually advertised in November through universities. If you do not hear anything about the internships in November, it is worth contacting Concern yourself, stating your background and area of interest. The internships are usually for students conducting research as part of their dissertation.
  
  
• GOAL
  GOAL do not offer internships. View their website for list of job vacancies. The Galway GOAL office is a useful source of information on the work of GOAL.
  
  
• VOLUNTARY SERVICE INTERNATIONAL (VSI)
  VSI offer 2 month placements in Developing Countries for people over the age 21. Many of their projects can be viewed on http://camps.sciint.org/
  
  
• TROCAIRE
  Trocaire offer internships in their Head Office and in offices overseas. For the past number of years, Trócaire has run an Internship Programme in partnership with DCU and now wishes to expand this to include all Universities/ Educational Institutions offering relevant Development Studies Courses. The aim of the Intern Programme is to provide an intensive, practical learning experience to recently qualified graduates who are seeking a career in development. Typically, prospective Interns will have a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline such as Human Rights, Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences etc.
