Institute for Environment, Marine and Energy

The Institute for Environment, Marine and Energy has been established in 2010 from a merger of the Environmental Change Institute and Martin Ryan Institute for Marine Science. It promotes interdisciplinary excellence in environmental, marine and energy research with a commitment to international collaboration, the educational mission of NUIG and support for a regional, national and EU sustainable development agenda.

The Institute for Environment, Marine and Energy has been established to:

• understand fundamental processes involved in priority areas of environmental, marine and energy research

• provide an institutional framework that will support interdisciplinary research across all colleges within NUIG

• promote collaborative research with other universities and research institutes within Ireland and overseas

• foster interaction with policy making bodies, regulatory authorities and other agencies involved in the promotion of sustainable development

• encourage research and research interactions with industry leading to innovative technologies and processes that facilitate social, economic and environmental security

• educate a cohort of graduate students with appropriate skills for work in the environmental, marine and energy sectors

• publicise the institute’s activities to schools, state agencies, industry and civil society

The research within the Institute is organised through priority research areas (Climate Change, Energy, Marine & Coastal Processes, Bio-resources, Environment and Health, Built Environment, Modelling & Informatics, Environmental Technologies and Socioeconomics & Policy).
