Employment institutions and labour market flows

The focus of this work is on estimating the scale of the effects of various employment institutions using micro economic panel data. The effects of employment institutions on labour market outcomes have been extensively studied by comparing cross-country aggregate measures of institutions and the outcome of interest—for example, the unemployment rate. However, it is not clear which institutions are important and to what extent they alter the functioning of the economy. Initial work has focused on the extent to which unions and employment protection affect involuntary employment separations.
