The Mission of the School of Education is:
Academic Programmes and Research
The School of Education offers a range of initial teacher education programmes for pre-service, post-primary teachers, and continuing professional development and educational research programmes for teachers and educators across sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary.
At graduate level, in consecutive, initial teacher education for the post-primary sector, the School provides the
Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) and the
Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas
(DGO), for education through the medium of Irish.
In collaboration with the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics (NUIG), the School of Education offers a concurrent, undergraduate teacher education degree: the
B.A. Mathematics and Education, which qualifies graduates to teach Mathematics and Applied Mathematics to honours Leaving Certificate level in post-primary schools. This programme, which enrolled its first students in 2008-2009, is unique in Ireland and internationally in terms of its specialist focus on the mathematical sciences, and mathematics and applied mathematics pedagogies.
For the continuing professional development of experienced, practising educators, the School of Education offers a postgraduate diploma in
Special Educational Needs (supported by the Department of Education and Skills), and the
Master of Education, which combines coursework with thesis research.
The School of Education facilitates several modes of research study at
Master (MLitt) and PhD levels; there are full-time and part-time options available for both. The School's areas of research interest and expertise include educational disadvantage, diversity and social justice; civic engagement and community-based research; mathematics education; content and language integrated learning (CLIL); inclusive learning environments and special educational needs; gender and education; anti-bullying and bullying prevention; and science, technology, engineering and mathematics outreach (STEM).
In collaboration with the School of Psychology (NUIG), the School of Education has this year introduced its first structured doctorate, in educational innovation and technology. The
Structured PhD Learning Sciences aims to support frontier research in technology-enhanced learning.
Several School of Education PhD students also undertake their doctoral research within the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies’ interdisciplinary, structured PhD programme.
Further to its established local, regional and national profile, the School of Education is also well positioned internationally, having developed strong transnational collaborations, in research and teaching, for example: the Erasmus Intensive Programme
BEAM: Building European Identity through Spirit, Sense and Meaning. This multilateral European project involves research and teaching collaboration between the School of Education, NUIG and teacher education institutions and universities from countries throughout the EU. In February 2010, the School of Education hosted the first
CLIL agus an Teagasc Trí Ghaeilge (CLIL and Teaching through Irish) conference, in partnership with Gaelscoileanna Teo. This international conference focused on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and the teaching of subjects on the second-level curriculum through the medium of Irish, raising the awareness of CLIL methods, strategies and current research.
