Semester 1: Practical Teaching Programme: Primary School Observations (5 ECTS)
Students conduct 10 hours of observation in primary schools. Assessment: Observation report and critical reflection in which students address how their experiences will inform their tutorial work with both primary and second-level students during the subsequent semester.
Semester 2: Practical Teaching Programme: Service Learning (5 ECTS)
After-school programme with St. Vincent de Paul in which students tutor primary and second-level students for mathematics remediation and/or enrichment. Assessment: Weekly focused reflections and responses to classmates’ reflections posted on a blog.
Year 2
Practical Teaching Programme: (15 ECTS)
As a full-year module, student will gain a range of practical experience through a variety of programmes, including a continuation of service learning (Semester 1), microteaching (Semester 1), and 30 hours of school-based classroom teaching practice.
Year 3
Semester 1: Practical Teaching Programme: Special Educational Needs (5 ECTS)
Total Hours: 20 – Classroom Teaching with focus on SEN
Student Teachers will complete 20hrs in the classroom with a focus on issues of catering for diverse learners and accommodating students with special educational needs. tasks will engage student teachers in designing learning activities and creating resources and materials to support a variety of learning needs.
Summer Session: Practical Teaching Programme: Mathematics Enrichment Programme (5 ECTS)
This programme will run for two weeks during the summer following Year 3. Student teachers are notified of this component from Year 1 so that they can plan for it in advance; however, in the case that someone is unable to participate outside of the University’s regular academic timetable, s/he may petition for completion of an alternative placement during the semester but must still partake in all planning and preparation efforts throughout the semester
Year 4
Practical Teaching Programme: Block Teaching Programme (20 ECTS)
Students will spend at least 15 hours per week in a school placement for a period of 12 weeks. During this placement, students will engage in all of the professional duties of a practicing teacher both in the classroom and within the greater school community.
