Fáilte romhat! Welcome to the English language webpage of An Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas.
An Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas (DGO) at NUI, Galway is a one year, full-time, second level teacher education programme, offered entirely through the medium of Irish, and recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purposes of registration as a post-primary teacher in Ireland, the EU, and other English speaking countries.
An Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas equips student teachers with the professional knowledge, theoretical and conceptual tools necessary for developing creative, flexible and reflective approaches to teaching. It also enables student teachers to address the potentially complex educational needs of a diverse range of students at second level, as well as develop skills in collegiality, team-work and an understanding of educators' ethical and legal obligations, in loco parentis.
Through the taught components of the programme students are introduced to conceptual frameworks and key issues within the disciplines and professional studies of education. They are supported in developing a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, as well as approaches to classroom management which are essential for successful teaching and learning outcomes. A particular emphasis is placed on developing the capacity of student teachers to teach through the medium of Irish and on the development of strategies for teaching and learning both content and language (CLIL).
Student teachers are also supported on school placement which provide them with a rich experiential base for the development of their potential as teachers. Tutorial sessions throughout the year are designed to enable the development of critical reflective thinking which supports individual professional development and helps to integrate theory and practice (click here for further information on Course Structure).
Applicants to An Dioplóma Gairmiúil san Oideachas are expected to demonstrate a third-level standard of proficiency in written and spoken Irish which is assessed by written and oral examination in February of each year at NUI, Galway (8 or 15 or 22 February 2013 for 2013-14 applicants). Only those who possess the required standard are considered for entry to the programme.
The Teaching Council of Ireland is the sole authority charged with teacher registration in the Republic of Ireland. The status of a Primary Degree determines the subjects a registered teacher is qualified to teach. Further information can be obtained from http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/. All questions about the status of primary degrees should be addressed to the Teaching Council at (01) 6106863/4.
