A native of Dublin, Carol graduated in 1990 with an honours degree in Management Science, from Trinity College, Dublin. She began her teaching career in a Vocational School, teaching Maths, Business Studies, Accountancy and IT to students at all levels, including higher level leaving certificate. She was fortunate enough to be invited to be involved in the development of innovative experiential learning programmes at post-leaving certificate level, and this opportunity ignited in her an interest in the development of learning and teaching programmes, tailored to meet the needs of specific groups of learners.
A fluent German-speaker, Carol spent two years living in Germany, where she developed learning programmes for marginalised groups, including young people, women returning to employment, and immigrants, mostly conducted within the parameters of various EU education and training programmes. On her return to Galway, she continued in this vein, working for seven years in the area of local development and social inclusion. This work enabled Carol to combine her experience in the classroom, with her interest in programme development, finding innovative ways to identify learner needs and interests, and to respond in a way which made learning relevant, exciting and successful.
In 2004, Carol became involved in the area of financial literacy, specifically looking at the prevention of over-indebtedness through education. This field of interest is the culmination of a career spanning twenty years in teaching, learning, programme development and social inclusion, and Carol is committed to stimulating social change through facilitating learning. She has written several programmes and modules - some award-winning - in the field of money management education, both alone and collaboratively. She is invited to speak on her work and on the theme of financial literacy nationally and internationally, and is eager to hear from others in the field.
Carol commenced her PhD in 2009, under the Supervision of Dr Tony Hall. Her research is looking at the effectiveness of education in preventing over-indebtedness. She is interested in the factors which lead to an individual becoming over-indebted, and in identifying which of these can be affected through education, and how. She is studying a number of accepted international approaches to financial education as part of her research.
