Research Projects
Research Cluster Co-Leader, Gender, Education and the Knowledge Economy. (with Dr. Kelly Coate, CELT, NUI Galway). This strategic research cluster involves gender scholars from across disciplines in both NUI Galway and University of Limerick. It is anticipated that this newly forged inter-institutional collaboration will foster joint grant applications, and publications.
Co-Investigator, The New Generation of Men Teachers: Thinking Critically about Role Modeling (with Amy McDonald) This research examines the experience of men in primary and secondary teacher education programs in Ireland and their potential contribution as role models for boys and young men. Women pre-service teachers are also included in the data set.
Co-Investigator, Boys, Masculinities, Men Teachers, and Mentorship Project (with Dr. Orla McCormack, University of Limerick). This research investigates the public concern regarding the need for role models for young men arising out of recent scholarship about boys and academic underachievement. It critically examines from the perspective of parents, teachers, and students, mentorship needs and models.
Co-Investigator and IFUT Representative, National Taskforce on Stress, Violence and Bullying, in the Workplace. Research sponsored and organized by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. Researchers are members of various Irish trade unions, representing nurses to telephone engineers and from academics to prison guards. Data was collected from across various occupations In Ireland. The final report (forthcoming 2011) aims to shape a White Paper to create a common national policy on stress, violence and bullying in the workplace.
Research Collaborator, Citizenship and World Mindedness. International collaborative cross-disciplinary, research between: NUI Galway (K. Davison & E. Keane, School of Education and Su-ming Khoo, Department of Sociology); Victoria University, Wellington, New Zeeland (L. Meyer); California State University, Monterey Bay, USA (C. Sleeter); University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, (K. Zeichner); San Jose State University, USA, (Hyun-Sook Park); Wollongong University, Australia (G. Hoban); University of Nottingham, United Kingdom (P. Sorensen). This research involves surveying diverse undergraduate and postgraduate students to gauge their openness to be agents of social change. Data from the research is shared between the different research sites. Partial funding secured by Su-ming Khoo through NUI Galway Millennium Research Grant.
Research Collaborator, Strategic Educational and Social Marketing Approaches to STEM Outreach and Communication (with Dr. Veronica McCauley and Dr. Christine Domegan). This research arises out of the Building Effective Science Outreach Strategies research. Annual International Research Conference on STEM Outreach and Communication aims to bring together diverse outreach stakeholders to strategise more effective STEM outreach activities to promote STEM in Ireland and increase national take up of STEM subjects and careers. The 4th annual conference has resulted in the collaborative drafting of a White Paper on STEM Outreach in Ireland. The research also involves implementing STEM outreach best practice with science education and Mathematics education cohorts at NUI Galway. Funded jointly by Discover Science and Engineering and STEPS to Engineering (€10,000).
Co-Investigator, and Treasurer, Building Effective Science Outreach Strategies North and South. Standing Conference on Teacher Education North and South (with Dr. Veronica McCauley, The National University of Ireland, Galway, and Drs. Billy McClune and Ruth Jarman, Queen’s University of Belfast). This research brings together major science outreach providers in Ireland, North and South, to attend a research symposium to mobilise effective strategies to promote science in Ireland. €11,000 (2007-2008)
Principal Investigator, Bridging Understanding and Reaching Out: Digital Storytelling with Marginalized Young Men in Rural Ireland. The National University of Ireland, Galway, Millennium Research Fund. This research examines substance abuse, suicide, and academic underachievement with young men in rural Ireland through digital storytelling. €6504.00 (2007)
Research Collaborator, Post-Colonial Masculinities and Schooling in the New Millennium. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Principal Investigator: Dr. Blye Frank, Division of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This project examined contemporary practices of masculinities in schools in relation to the colonial educational histories of Canada, Australia, and South Africa. There were three research sites: Halifax, Perth, and Durban. Funds obtained: CDN$129,216. (2002 - 2005)
Research Collaborator, Contradictions and Tensions in the Lives of Men: Exploring Masculinities in the Numerically Female Dominated Professions of Nursing and Elementary School Teaching. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Principal Investigator: Dr. Joan Evans, School of Nursing, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. This project examined the experiences of men nurses and men elementary school teachers in Canada. There were research sites in three Canadian cities: Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Halifax.
