This short event was organized primarily to support communcation and collaboration amongst NUI Galway researchers from any discipline interested in Energy research. The forty-plus strong audience consisted of natural scientists, engineers, social scientists, economists and other researchers involved in business, law and public policy, as well as several key collaborators from industry. An output of the event was a great deal of input towards a "roadmap of energy research at NUIG" for 2010, which will soon be made available. The programme is below, and you can view PDF's of any of the presentations given by clicking on the links below.

Minister Conor Lenihan, Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, accompanied by SFI Director Prof. Frank Gannon and other SFI colleagues, visited with researchers from the Energy Research Centre (ERC) on Thursday October 1st. The ERC's Director, Prof. Vincent O'Flaherty, and other ERC principal investigators gave the group an overview and tour of some of the ERC laboratories. The Minister was very engaged, and posed numerous clever questions to the researchers. We were delighted to have Minister Lenihan and Prof. Gannon, and look forward to welcoming them again at a future visit.

Professor Vincent O'Flaherty, leader of the ECI's thematic research area of Energy and Director of the ECI's Energy Research Centre, has been appointed by the Government to sit on the Comhar Sustainable Development Council (SDC) for a new three-year term. Comhar SDC is the forum for national consultation and dialogue on all issues relating to sustainable development. The council has 25 members drawn from five pillars: the state sector, the economic sector, environmental NGOs, social/community NGOs, and the professional/academic sector. In a recent SFI sponsored visit to NUI Galway, Dr Jimmy Devins, T.D., Minister of State for Science and Innovation, spent part of the afternoon talking to ERC researchers and visiting some of our facilities. The Minister leant an attentive ear as members of the Microbial Ecology Laboratory, the Biomolecular Electronics Research Laboratory, the Combustion Chemistry Centre, the Power Electronics Research Centre, the Biogeoscience Research Group, the Departments of Civil and Mechanical & Biomedical Engineering, and the Environmental Engineering Research Laboratory, all gathered together to display working models, posters, and experiments relating to their research.
The ECI's Energy Research Centre (ERC) has attracted over €5 million in initial funding for its work. Prof. Vincent O'Flaherty, director of the ERC, says "From electricity-producing micro-organisms to smarter wind power, there are possibilities for new apporoaches to energy generation all around us." He adds, "If we can upscale our energy research and take a more co-ordinated approach nationally, there is a clear opportunity for Ireland to take a leadership role in this critical field."

At the poster display and research showcase. | Susan Boland of the ERC discusses her research on biofuel cells with fellow NUI Galway researcher, Brian Ward. |
The official launch of the ERC took place on Monday December 15th, at the Environmental Change Institute. The event was well attended by both NUI Galway Researchers, and people working in industry in the areas of energy and the environment.
The aim for the centre is to become an international centre of excellence, as well as a central hub for energy research in Ireland. Nationally, it is the first of its kind with such wide-ranging scope and will build on NUI Galway's strong reputation in areas such as bioenergy, energy efficient technologies, renewable resources and energy policy. At the launch and networking event, one researcher from each of these four main thematic areas gave a short presentation, providing insight into some of the research that is taking place within the ERC.
