Equality and Diversity Initiative in the CoEI, NUI Galway

The CoEI aligns with the University’s mission and its strategic plan 2015-2020, to foster a vibrant community of students and staff, where distinguished learning, impactful research, and creative thinking are shared with the world. The CoEI reinforces and fully supports the university’s commitment to make real and lasting changes to career development in supporting and advancing women throughout the pipeline including; attracting more females into engineering, education of undergraduates and postgraduates, and career development of postdoctoral researchers and staff. What is Athena SWAN?

As part of the Equality and Diversity Initiative, the College of Engineering and Informatics (CoEI) at National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway are working on the proposal for the Bronze Athena SWAN Award. The CoEI proposal will be submitted in parallel with the Institutional NUI Galway application for a Bronze Athena SWAN Award in April 2017.

Athena SWAN is a Charter and Awards programme co-ordinated by the UK-based Equality Challenge Unit to promote best practice in advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (or STEMM). It has been developed to encourage and recognise commitment to combating the underrepresentation of women in STEMM research and academia. An external evaluation in the UK in 2013 showed a significant impact of Athena SWAN on organisational structure and culture change in the higher education system there.

Regular updates on the assessment will be communicated to all CoEI staff and there will be an opportunity for staff to comment on the developing draft application during the drafting process.
