Biography

Stephen in a lecturer in civil engineering at NUI Galway. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 1997 with a BAI in Civil Engineering and a BA in Maths. He spent two further years in TCD studying for a MSc by research which was funded by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency and focused on the development of a water quality model of Wexford Harbour. In 1999, he moved to Galway to work as a Project Engineer with Aquafact International Services Ltd. In 2002, he left Aquafact to begin a PhD at National University of Ireland, Galway, focussed on the development of a dynamically nested tidal flow model. Later the same year, he took up his current role as a full-time lecturer at NUI Galway and continued his PhD part-time, graduating in 2010. 

Stephen teaches a number of hydraulic/water engineering modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is programme director for the MSc in Water Resources Engineering. His research expertise is the numerical and physical modelling of surface waters, including physical, chemical and biological processes. Applications include the modelling of tidal currents, waves, water quality, coastal flooding, tidal/wave energy and aquaculture. He leads the Marine Modelling Group and is a member of both the Ryan Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy Research and the SFI centre for Marine & Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI). He has completed 20+ research projects funded by national and EU agencies and industry, and has 60+ peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conference proceedings. 


Research Interests

Main research areas include:

Physical and computer modelling of surface waterbodies including rivers, lakes, estuaries, seas and oceans. Expertise includes modelling of hydrodynamics (waves, tides), water quality (nutrients, sediment, algae), aquaculture, wave/tidal energy and coastal flooding.
