Undergraduate students of English may participate in the university's BA International programme.
The B.A. International is a four year programme involving a one year period of study in another European Union country or in the United States.
OBJECTIVE
The B.A. International will enable suitably qualified students to study, in the third year of the programme, both of their academic subjects in a University of another European Union country. Normally, a student taking the B.A. International Programme will be taking at least one modern continental language to degree level and will spend the year abroad studying that language and its literature, in a country where it is spoken, and also studying approved courses for their second subject through that same language with emphasis on the European/Continental dimension.
PROGRAMME DURATION
The programme is of four years duration
ADMISSION
Admission to the programme takes place during the Second Arts year.
PROGRAMME CONTENT
The student must select her/his two degree subjects from the list set out below. Normally at least one subject must be a modern continental language (French, German, Italian or Spanish). The following is the list from which the subjects must be selected:
Archaeology, Classical Civilisation, Economics, English, French, Geography/Tíreolaíocht, German, Greek, History, Information Technology, Irish, Italian, Latin, Legal Science, Mathematical Physics, Mathematics, Mathematical Studies, Philosophy, Sociological and Political Studies, Spanish.
Students not taking a modern continental language or a subject combination in accordance with the above may, with the permission of the Faculty of Arts, on the recommendation of the departments concerned be admitted to the programme.
QUOTA OF PLACES
The overall number of places on the programme is limited and there is also a limitation on the number of places available for each modern continental language.
SELECTION
Selection will be made in accordance with criteria determined by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Faculty of Arts. An overall pass at the First Arts Summer Examination will be a prerequisite.
FEE PAYMENT
During their year abroad, students will not normally be required to pay fees at the host university.
COURSES TAKEN ABROAD
Subject to the approval of the relevant departments, credit will be given for courses taken and examinations passed by the student while in the host university.
