The Pre-Masters English Language Pathway Programme is a modular course at higher diploma level (level 8) designed to develop students English language skills to a level commensurate with studying at third level. The aim of the programme is to develop proficiency in the core linguistic areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and to prepare students in the essential academic skills for postgraduate study including research methodologies, academic writing, critical reading and presentation skills. Students will be required also to undertake a minor research project relevant to their chosen discipline.

Aimed at students who:

  • Must attend as a condition of entry to chosen postgraduate degree at NUI Galway

  • General English language acquisition (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
  • English for Academic Purposes
  • Academic Skills; Research, Communication, Academic Writing, Presentations
  • Orientation to NUI Galway's learning technologies and support services

Course Objectives

  • Develop students' English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and academic skills for successful transition to postgraduate study.
  • Develop students' learner skills for group tasks and independent study and research
  • Orientation to Irish culture and life at NUI Galway including learning technologies and student support services

Course Dates: 14 January – 19 July 2019

Times: 9.30-11.00, 11.30-13.00, 14.00 - 15.00 Monday – Friday

Tuition Fee: €8,750

Registration Fee: €50

Course Materials: €150

Exams: Programme exams will be sat 6-16 August 2019 (Exact dates to be confirmed)

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the programme are an IELTS band of 5.5 where a score of 5.0 is permitted in one component band only and where all other bands must be a minimum of band 5.5 or higher. Students must be 18 years or above to enter and hold an honours degree in any subject.

Other Information

  • Registration fee: €50
  • IMPORTANT: The academic entry requirements are an IELTS band of 5.5 where a score of 5.0 is permitted in one component band only and where all other bands must be a minimum of band 5.5 or higher
  • Students must have successfully completed a recognised Bachelor Degree
  • Final acceptance onto the Pre-Masters English Language Pathway Programme is at the discretion of the Programme Director
  • Students must be 18 years or over to join programme
  • There must be a minimum of five students enrolled to proceed with all courses
  •  Maximum class size is 15 students
  •  For social and leisure programme information please click HERE
  •  No classes take place at weekends or on national/public holidays
  • Please note: as this programme begins in semester 2, on campus accommodation is limited. Please contact the English Language Centre for availability.
