General English
Programme Overview
General English courses at the National University of Ireland Galway's English Language Centre are designed to develop students' abilities to communicate more effectively as speakers of English.
Student participation is encouraged through topic-based communicative activities – discussions, role-play, debates, reports and presentations.
Our curriculum puts emphasis on enhancing communication and fluency skills while also attending to grammar understanding and vocabulary development.
Students have the option of choosing a standard programme which includes 15 hours tuition per week or an intensive option of 22.5 hours per week.
Features (5): General English skills development [speaking, listening, reading, writing] / vocabulary development / grammar review and development / Irish literature focus / socio-cultural focus.
Programme Aim
The aim of our General English courses is to provide a varied, stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere in which students can develop their ability to communicate more effectively while learning about the culture, literature and society of Ireland.

- Courses are offered from elementary to advanced level (A2-C1)
- Beginner and proficiency level courses subject to availability
- Each student sits a placement test on day one to determine appropriate class level
- Students must be 18 years or over to join our programmes
- There must be a minimum of five students enrolled to proceed with all courses/levels
- Maximum class size is 12 students
