The Group includes 11 nationally and internationally recognised applied economists from within the economics discipline at NUIG as well as a number of associate researchers from other disciplines on campus and other universities and research institutes with whom we work. The group is led by Tom van Rensburg. About 30 graduate students are part of the group with about half of these pursuing a PhD.

Karen works on a joint project between NUIG, Teagasc and the Marine Institute - the Beaufort Marine Socio-economic Research Project. Her research uses a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Model to investigate the impact of marine sector on the local economy and employment. She also uses the RERC Simulation Model of the Irish Local Economy (SMILE), and GIS spatial microsimulation modelling to quantify marine policy impacts at the local community level. |

Cathal is based in the Rural Economy Research Centre (RERC), Teagasc. His research interests include agricultural, environmental and natural resource economics and he used non-market valuation techniques to estimate recreational demand for walking with Tom van Rensburg and Stephen Hynes. He continues this interest but also works on the economics of water under the Nitrates Directive and the economic impact of changing agricultural practices to comply with this directive. |
