- sources and sinks of dissolved and particulate matter in the oceans, in particular trace element inputs from Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD), and from Submarine Hydrothermal Venting
- ocean acidification, in particular the alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon status of water masses off the west of Ireland
- effects of shellfish aquaculture on the transformation of nutrient, trace element and carbon inputs to coastal embayments

Griffith Geoscience Research Project: impact of intertidal and submarine groundwater discharge on the chemistry of coastal waters along the south Galway and Clare coast.
MIME: supervising postgraduate research into the development of semi-autonomous voltammetric methods for the measurement of trace metals in estuarine and marine waters, allied to research on the uptake of trace metals by macroalgae.
Oceanography Research Group: supervising postgraduate and postdoctoral research into the status of Irish continental shelf and off-shelf waters with respect to ocean acidification parameters
