ERASMUS, the European Union's flagship mobility programme in the field of education and training, was established in 1987, and NUI Galway has been an active participant since the beginning. ERASMUS stands for "EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students" and it was named after the philosopher, theologian and humanist Erasmus (1465-1536), who lived and worked in several countries in Europe, in quest of the knowledge, experience and insights which only such contact with other countries could bring. Originally part of the SOCRATES programme, Erasmus has, since 2007, been a subprogramme of the EU's Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP).
The Erasmus programme aims at enhancing the quality and reinforcing the European dimension of higher education as well as at increasing student and staff mobility. It enriches students' lives not only in the academic field, but also in the acquisition of intercultural skills and self-reliance. Staff exchanges are also of significant benefit, both for the individuals participating and for the institutions involved.

NUI Galway celebrated 25 years of the Erasmus Programme with an Erasmus Fair held in the Aula Maxima on 15th January. The event brought together over 200 current, returned and future Erasmus students, and provided an opportunity for reminiscing and sharing experiences, as well as a chance for prospective Erasmus students to learn more about the programme and meet those who have taken part or who are currently here on Erasmus.
The winners of the Erasmus 25th Anniversary Photographic Competition were presented with their prizes at this event.

The winning photographs, as well as a selection of other pictures submitted by 2011/12 NUI Galway Erasmus students, are featured in a commemorative calendar for 2013.
NUI Galway ERASMUS student runs Dublin Marathon as part of Team Erasmus
The HEA gathered Erasmus students from around the country to run the 2012 Dublin City Marathon under the banner of “Team Erasmus”, as part of the programme's 25th Anniversary celebrations. Eleven students from 6 countries took part, and NUI Galway was ably represented by Juan Alonso Pastor, who is a Business Studies student here on Erasmus from the University of Valencia. It was Juan’s first marathon, and he completed the course in just over four hours. He described it as an "amazing experience" and is already looking for other long-distance running opportunities.
We would like to warmly congratulate Juan on his fine achievement.
