2012/13 Applicants
2011/12 StudentsOur 2012/13 Application Form and Information Brochure are now available in the section Admission Procedures (left-hand menu). Please ensure that you read that section carefully before you make your application.
Erasmus coordinators at our partner universities should advise us as soon as possible of their 2012/13 student nominations; we have also provided a page specifically for them, Information for Coordinators, which they are kindly requested to read carefully.
Deadlines for receipt of applications: 31st May, 2012 for Semester 1 or Full Year applicants, and 31st October, 2012 for Semester 2 applicants.
The main Orientation Day will be Thursday, 30th August, with a morning session for all new international students, and an afternoon session specifically for our new Erasmus students. Attendance on this day is compulsory. Erasmus students will receive their registration packs and identity cards at the end of the afternoon session.
On Friday, 31st August, there will be academic advisory sessions in a number of popular subjects.
Full details of all important August/September dates/events for international students will be posted later in the summer on our
Orientation page.
Teaching begins on Monday, 3rd September. Registration for Semester 1 and Full-Year courses will take place approximately 10 - 14 days later on a date to be announced. This is the date on which you will formally register your choice of courses. In other words, you have about two weeks in which to decide which courses you will take. For one week after course selection you may be permitted to make some changes to your list of registered modules, but after that no further changes will be possible.
Students who wish to take seminar courses in the subject ENGLISH should note that there is an additional registration for these courses; date and venue will be announced. Upon registering for an English seminar course, you will be given a letter which you must present at course registration.
The 2012/13 Visiting Student Academic Handbook will be posted on our website later in the summer. In the meantime, you may find it useful to look at the 2011/12 Academic Handbook for Full Year and Semester 1 Visiting Students; the course listings are broadly similar from year to year. Please note that Learning Agreements signed on the basis of the 2011/12 Visiting Student Booklet are approved in principle only, with the proviso that some course offerings may change from one year to the next. In other words, we are unable to guarantee the availability of particular courses until the up-to-date Handbook is published. Bear in mind also that some courses may have prerequisites, or a limit in terms of the number of students that may enrol for them.
When making your choice of courses, please bear in mind that you should only select courses (also called "modules") in the subject area that is covered by the bilateral agreement which your university has with NUI Galway, and under which you are coming to study here (e.g. "Arts/Humanities"; "Business Studies"; "Law", "Engineering", etc). Please do remember that courses that you may find while browsing through our individual College or School websites might not be available to visiting students, and you should only select your courses after consulting the relevant list of visiting student modules from the above-mentioned Visiting Student Academic Handbook. Erasmus students will not be permitted to register for any courses that are not on listed in this booklet. (The only exception is for those students coming to NUI Galway under specific exchanges with our School of Law, who may select additional courses from the Law School Visiting Student Guide; these courses are not available to any other Erasmus students.) Please make your course choices in consultation with your academic coordinator at your home university. Recognition for courses taken and examinations passed at NUI Galway during your Erasmus visit will be a matter for your home university.
With regard to the subject ENGLISH, please note that visiting students are only permitted to take one seminar course per semester - you will find a long list of these in the above-mentioned booklet. Lecture courses are listed separately, and you may take as many of these courses as your timetable permits, while noting that some lectures may have overlapping timeslots: if a course involves two lectures per week, you must make sure your timetable allows you to attend both. When completing your learning agreement, please ensure to select no more than one English seminar course. There will be a separate Registration for English Seminar courses and this always takes place before the general Course Selection date. If you register for an English Seminar course, you will be given a letter which you will need to present at Course Selection.
Please note that any questions about course content, credit weightings, timetables, etc cannot be answered by staff of the International Office - it's worth checking the relevant departmental website in the first instance, and if you need to discuss the content of courses in detail, you should contact the relevant academic coordinator at NUI Galway. You can find the name of your coordinator in this list.
Incoming Erasmus Medical students will be required to present certification of
Health Screening on arrival at the Medical School and prior to placement at NUI Galway.
They must also provide a Police Clearance Certificate from their country of origin. This is also referred to as Garda Vetting (An Garda Síochána = Ireland's national police service).
We have been asked to bring the following to your attention.
3rd year Biotechnology (3BY) is only available for incoming students in semester I alone (30 ECTS), or as a full two-semester course (60 ECTS). Due to the organisation of the NUI Galway Biotechnology degree, it is not possible to enrol for 3rd year Biotechnology (3BY) in semester II alone.
Semester 1 results were available online via the Examinations Office website for approximately five weeks from 25th January. Transcripts for Semester 1 students were posted to the International Offices of our partner universities on 27th January. Students staying for the full academic year should note that their semester 1 and 2 transcripts will be posted together to their home universities in late June/early July, as will the transcripts of Semester 2-only students. Please bear in mind that online results are normally only available for a five-week period from the date of issue.
