An informal food and drinks reception will be held in the Student Centre Bar beside the Conference Hall.

Monday, July 12

10.00 - 12.00 h Coffee Morning for Accompanying Persons

All registered accompanying persons are invited to a coffee morning in Room 114 of the Quadrangle. An introductory talk on NUI, Galway will be given and a short video presentation on Galway and the West of Ireland will be shown.

14.30 - 17.30 h Tour 1: Galway City Bus Tour and Galway Crystal Heritage Centre

The afternoon will begin with a guided tour of Galway City and Salthill on board a vintage bus. During the tour you will stop at the Galway Crystal Heritage Centre, a Georgian style building which houses an Interpretative Centre, Showroom and Restaurant and see master craftspeople at work.
Cost: IR£12, which includes bus tour, guide, entrance fee and refreshments.

19.00 - 21.00 h Reception, NUI, Galway

This informal food and drinks reception will be hosted by the President of the University and local dignitaries and will be held in the Aula Maxima of the Quadrangle.

Tuesday, July 13

9.30 - 17.30 h Tour 2: Full Day Tour to the Aran Islands

The Aran Islands, located in the mouth of Galway Bay, have a bleak landscape criss-crossed by dry stone walls along with impressive cliffs soaring out of the Atlantic. The islands have retained much of their ancient culture; Gaelic is still the spoken language of the Islanders and traditional music and song have been well preserved there.
You will be collected by bus and transferred to the ferry port of Rossaveal where you will take a modern ferry to the main island. On arrival, you will enjoy a guided tour of the island by minibus, including a visit to the spectacular prehistoric Dun Aengus Fort. Lunch will be arranged in a local restaurant. You will have the afternoon free to roam the island by foot or hired bicycle and explore Kilronan Village with its pubs and craft shops.
Cost: IR£40, which includes buses and ferry, guide and lunch.

20.00 - 21.30 h Concert at St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church

This interesting city-centre church was founded in 1320 and was visited by Christopher Columbus when he stopped in Galway on one of his voyages to the New World. Music will be provided by the renowned Galway choral group Cois Cladaigh and special guests.

Wednesday, July 14

12.00 - 21.30 h Tour 3: Half-Day Tour to the Aran Islands

A packed lunch will be provided. You will be collected by bus and transferred to the ferry port of Rossaveal where you will take a modern ferry to the main island. On arrival, you will enjoy a guided tour of the island by minibus, including a visit to the spectacular Dun Aengus Fort. You will have time to explore the island before enjoying the Aran Ceilí Banquet; an evening of excellent food and entertainment provided by musicians and dancers from the island.
Cost: IR£50, which includes buses and ferry, guide, dinner and entertainment.

13.00 - 18.00 h Tour 4: Historical Walking Tour of Galway and River Cruise

A packed lunch will be provided. The tour will start from the Archway of the University and the route will bring you past Galway Cathedral, Lynch's Castle, St. Nicholas' Church, the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square. At Woodquay you will board the Corrib Princess, a luxury river cruiser, for a 90-minute cruise of the River Corrib and Lough Corrib. Your guide will treat you to a live commentary covering the many historical anecdotes associated with the area. Refreshments will be served on board.
Cost: IR£12, which includes guides, boat cruise and refreshments.

13.00 - 18.00 h Tour 5: Thoor Ballylee and Coole Park

A packed lunch will be provided. This tour will introduce you to Galway's literary heritage. The first stop will be Thoor Ballylee, the former home of William Butler Yeats, the world-renowned poet. It was in this tranquil setting that he wrote many of his works. The tower house dates back to the 16th century and now accommodates an audio-visual theatre, which illustrates Yeats' life. Next stop is Coole Park, a national forest and wildlife park with many literary associations, including the famous "autograph tree" signed by distinguished visitors of Lady Gregory at Coole House.
Cost: IR£15, which includes bus, guide, entrance fees and refreshments.

13.00 - 21.00 h Tour 6: The Burren, Cliffs of Moher and Seafood Dinner

A packed lunch will be provided. The bus will bring you through the villages of Clarinbridge, Kinvara and Ballyvaughan to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher rising to 215 metres from the Atlantic Ocean. The tour will continue through the centre of the Burren, a limestone area famous for its natural beauty and unusual plants. You will return via the spa town of Lisdoonvarna and have dinner in the famous seafood restaurant, Moran's Oyster Cottage, in Kilcolgan.
Cost: IR£30, which includes bus, guide, entrance fee and dinner.

13.00 - 21.00 h Tour 7: Bunratty Folk Park and Medieval Banquet

A packed lunch will be provided. The bus will bring you directly through County Clare to Bunratty Folk Park near the river Shannon. You will see authentic interpretations of early Irish life from the Medieval period to Irish Cottage living. The tour will include a Medieval Banquet in Bunratty Castle where you will be entertained by the Bunratty Singers with enchanting melodies sung to the music of harp and violin.
Cost: IR£50, which includes guide, entrance fee, banquet and entertainment.

Thursday, July 15

9.30 - 17.30 h Tour 8: Full-day Tour of Connemara

Connemara is one of Europe's last great areas of natural wilderness with small towns and villages located along the beautiful, indented coastline and in the wild interior. The beauty of the area lies in its rocky and rugged landscape, covered in desolate tracts of bogland dotted with lakes against a backdrop of barren mountains.
The tour will take you along Lough Corrib, through the villages of Moycullen and Oughterard to Maam Cross. You will travel though the beautiful Maam Valley to the village of Leenane, backed by the Maamturk Mountains and facing Killary Harbour. Next stop is Kylemore with its picturesque lake and famous Abbey, once the castle of Mitchell Henry, M.P., and now a convent and school of the Benedictine Nuns. The journey continues to the coastal town of Clifden for lunch. The return tour will take you back to Galway via Maam Cross, Screeb and the fishing villages of Rossaveal and Spiddal on the coast of Galway Bay.
Cost: IR£30, which includes bus, guide, entrance fee and lunch.

19.30 - 23.00 h Eurocarb X Banquet, Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill

You will be brought from your accommodation by bus for an optional pre-dinner walk along the bracing seafront promenade at Salthill before being treated to the best of Irish food, entertainment and drink. Feel free to wear your glad rags! A bus service will return you to your accommodation.
Cost: £45, which includes buses, pre-dinner reception, dinner, entertainment and drinks.

Friday July 16

9.30 - 12.30 h Tour 9: Spiddal Village and Craft Centre

This tour will take you from Galway along the coast road to Spiddal village. Your first stop is a traditional thatch cottage which has been the family home of the Naughton Family for over 100 years. The woman of the house, Nancy Naughton, will demonstrate how to make Irish bread in the traditional way over an open fire and serve home-made scones and tea as she explains the history and folklore of the area. Next stop is Spiddal Craft Village where you will have an opportunity to browse the various art galleries, jewellers, hand-knitting and weaving as well as woodturning shops.
Cost: IR£12, which includes bus, guide and refreshment.

19.00 - late Friday Night Dinner

Relax after a hard week in a local restaurant. The pubs stay open until midnight and then there's always a night-club for the young and young at heart!
Cost: IR£25, which includes four-course dinner and a drink.

Galway Arts Festival

Widely regarded as Ireland's most popular arts extravaganza, the Galway Arts Festival is a truly international celebration of the performing and visual arts which takes place in Galway City each July. Facilites for Children

A supervised crèche, suitable for children from 2 years upwards and catering for a maximum of 12 children, is located in Corrib Village for its residents. Children are accepted for two-hour sessions and the fee is from IR£2.00 per child per session.
Children from five years upwards who are resident in Corrib Village may partake in organised activities such as treasure hunts and tennis free of charge. Canoeing, horse-riding and bicycle hire can be booked from the reception of Corrib Village. Fees for these activities will be advised locally. Facilities for Adults

A fully-equipped gym and courts for various racquet sports are located beside the Conference Hall. For joggers, there are miles of unspoiled trails adjacent to Corrib Village, while swimmers may enjoy the wide expanse of Galway Bay and its beautiful beaches.
