Seminar: Interdisciplinary Science – a new approach to undergraduate curricula
Professor Derek Raine is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Leicester and is well-known for his work in science education, pioneering the use of PBL, computer-based teaching and a range of other curricular innovations. He is a holder of the Institute of Physics’ Bragg Medal and is the Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and its ‘Integrated Science’ degree programmes. Integrated Science represents a radical redesign of a science curriculum that disregards disciplinary boundaries and which has a strong focus on enquiry based learning and exposes students to research-like activities from the outset. This approach has been recognised and supported by the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry and makes use of a range of designated teaching facilities and laboratories.
Prof. Raine will give an overview of the approach, describe the progress of the programme and open up discussion on issues around curricular design for the contemporary age. This discussion will be of relevance to many different disciplines and fields and not just science.
