The Department:
The Department of Geography was established in 1962, the Chair of Geography in 1968. The Department is housed in purpose-built accommodation between the Concourse and the river. It has a large practical room with cartographic facilities, a number of small laboratories, a PC and GIS suite and an extensive map collection. Geography students have access to the university computer network.
Typically, each full-time member of the faculty is involved in graduate supervision with M.Litt. and Ph.D. students and teaches three speciality courses per academic year to second and third year students and contributes to first-year lectures, practical classes and field class preparation and delivery. In addition, the Department is actively involved in the delivery of courses through the medium of Irish, which are taught by staff members with competence in the language and part-time members of staff.

Graduate Studies In Geography
The Department of Geography offers three graduate study programmes to suitably qualified applicants.
M.A. in Environment, Society & Development - taught Masters programme
M.Litt. in Geography - a two-year programme of supervised research on a chosen topic
Ph.D. in Geography - a longer term programme of supervised research on a chosen topic

Undergraduate
The Department offers undergraduate courses in physical and human geography as part of a three-year Bachelor of Arts degree programme. Four subjects are taken in the first year and two subjects thereafter. Geography may be combined in the second and third years with one of 18 other subjects offered by the Arts Faculty, normally history, archaeology, economics, political science and sociology, mathematics, Irish, French or Italian.
Centre for Innovation and Structural Change (
CISC)
The Centre for Innovation and Structural Change is an interdisciplinary research centre at the National University of Ireland, Galway partnered by University College Dublin and Dublin City University Business School. The key objective of CISC is to build an internationally recognised programme of research and research training on the innovation processes and policies that are fundamental to the development of a knowledge-based economy. CISC has been awarded competitive funding of Euro 2.8 million under the Irish Government's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) of the Higher Education Authority. The department's involvement in CISC consists of Professor Seamus Grimes as leader of the cluster looking at internationally traded services, and Dr Patrick Collins as researcher.
Historical Geography Research Group (
HGRG)
