Tina-Karen Pusse is a graduate of  the Universities of Freiburg i.Br. (MA 1999) and Cologne (PhD 2003). Before coming to Galway in 2008, she was teaching German Literature and Media Theory in Cologne. She is an editor of the journal Freiburger Geschlechterstudien, and a member of the IVG, the International Union of Researchers in German Studies,  a partner of TestAs (an organisation that is currently developing placement- and entry tests to German universities for non-EU applicants), and an alumna and evaluator of the German National Academic Foundation.

Ecocriticism, concepts of alterity, German literature from1880 to 1945 (especially Rilke, Nietzsche, Celan, Kafka, Jahnn), t(r)opology of laughter, memoria and affect regulation in German poetologies, adoption/doing family

Current Research Project

„Doing family". On artificial procreation and adoption in German literature and film

This research project aims to merge two of the most recurring narrations in German literary history and to bring them into the focus of precarious parenthood.

We all experience parenthood; if not as parents, then by way of being parented or, in the face of the ubiquity of images of idyllic family life, in the longing for being parents or being parented. Nevertheless, ’parenthood’ is a contingent social construct. Early myths of changelings, literary fairy tales about children accidentally growing up with the ’wrong’ parents, as well as numerous stories of artificial bodies brought to life from medieval literature to science fiction, ultimately, and probably above all, construct ’families’. The goal of this project is to give evidence, that those families are not only a substitution for real families, but also retroactively show that families are never ’real’; that family, like gender or race, is not based primarily on biological criteria, but has to be ’acted out’ – which implicates that families are rather virtual than biological units. Arguably, the rules for the construction of ’families’ are changing. Despite the fact that the collective phantasm of the Holy Family, for instance, is still a potent and vivid projection space in the Western world, the discourses of ’family’ have been revised.

This subject is tightly tied up to concepts of alterité, is connected to problems of psychopathography and has to be examined with and in different media.
